The legal form that we ask you to agree to when submitting to our issues is a perpetual non-exclusive licensing release. This means that we want the rights to publish your piece indefinitely when and where we see fit, whether that is on our website, in our print editions, etc.
This also means that you retain your rights to the piece. You can submit it for publication in another place, you can edit and rework it to create a new piece, you can publish it yourself, etc. We do not want to tie you to an exclusive agreement that could stifle creative iterations.
If your piece is accepted then we will be in contact about the next steps, which includes our publication agreement. This is a process we want you to feel good about. At any point in time you can ask for more clarification or decide not to move forward.
Check out the 'After you submit' accordions on our submissions guidelines page for more details.
